Poynter, Shelley, “Coach” Woodard, 48, went to be with her Lord on February 12, 2012 after a thirteen year battle with breast cancer. Shelley was a beloved coach, teacher, and mentor for twenty seven years at Maize USD 266 and finishing at Maize South HS. She was born on July 28, 1963, and a 1981 graduate of Maize HS. She graduated from Kansas State University and, received her Master’s Degree in Arts and Education from Baker University. Her involvement at KSU included member/leader of Chi Omega Sorority and a member of the Women’s Basketball team where they advanced to the Elite Eight. She was a life-long member of the Maize United Methodist Church, where she served as the VBS Director. She was a ten year member of 4-H, active leader and National Guernsey Princess. Shelley has been a mentor and coach to numerous students in basketball, volleyball, softball and taught swimming lessons for many years. She was an avid runner and captain of the West team at the East vs. West Run for cancer. She is survived by her devoted husband, A.C. her children, Shea, McKenna, and T.C.; father Gene Woodard and wife Kay and her, mother Marilyn Hisle and husband Phil and his children; brother Gerald Woodard and wife Leslye; nephews Gage, Grady, and Gavin; grandparents Jean Woodard of Maize, KS, and Pauline Sapp of Grove, OK; mother-in-law, Mariann Poynter; step-siblings, Troy Gerken, Michael & Sharon Gerken, Tiffany & Heath Denny, Jacqueline & Brian Arterburn, Rene` & Jason Cuaderes. She was preceded in death by grandparent’s Gail Woodard, Ray Sapp, Carrol M. Poynter and sister-in-law Cindy Poynter along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation with the family present, 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 15 at Cochran Mortuary, 1411 N. Broadway (parking off Market). A celebration of life service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Central Community Church, 6100 W. Maple. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Victory In The Valley, 3755 E.
